The perfect introduction

[Transnational networks work when there are people behind them who communicate openly, pursue common goals and respect each other. With this look behind the scenes, we introduce you to employees within the European Food Network who, with their know-how and enthusiasm for the job, ensure that your food products are available across Europe every day].

In this article, Saskia Steigerwald, a trainee in freight forwarding and logistics services at DACHSER's Nuremberg logistics center, explains why she followed a friends advice and started her career with an apprenticeship at DACHSER.

A good friend of mine is already working as a forwarding and logistics services clerk, and while meeting in a café, she explained to me in vivid terms why she's so enthusiastic about working in logistics. As we talked, she recommended that I should definitely consider doing an internship in the industry. I was intrigued and naturally wanted to know if an apprenticeship in the logistics industry would suit me. So I applied for an internship at DACHSER. During the informative internship, it quickly became clear to me that I could learn a profession at DACHSER in Nuremberg that exactly matched my expectations. And I can assure you that I really enjoyed the internship. As a result, I applied for an apprenticeship as a forwarding and logistics services clerk at the Nuremberg logistics center and was given the opportunity to start my career with DACHSER.

The right decision: Because the training is exciting and varied. Above all, the training provides me with a concentrated amount of specialist knowledge. As a businesswoman in logistics, I have to be able to understand the interlinking of the departments and thus the smooth flow and consistency of the processes at all times. In particular, I need to know and understand the links between departments and activities in detail. The working atmosphere is great. I always have fun with my colleagues - we have a relaxed and open atmosphere.

What I find particularly great is that DACHSER offers its employees a wide range of further training opportunities. If you show the necessary commitment, you can become a manager. The requirements for the job can be summed up quickly. You need to be a little robust and alert, but at the same time relaxed, always interested and able to improvise. A high level of concentration, accuracy and flexibility are required. The ability to work in a team is also important. We have to stick together and support each other across departments.

In my free time, I like to do sports and work out at the gym. I particularly enjoy being outdoors and going for long walks with my dog. Afterwards, I sometimes come home very hungry and of course cook myself something delicious to eat. To relax completely, I like to watch a series.

I hope that I have been able to give you a little insight into my working life and that you have enjoyed reading about it. My tip for those starting their careers: Before you decide on an apprenticeship, do an internship with your potential future employer.

Yours, Saskia Steigerwald
